Dubbo Film Society

Dubbo Film Society History

The Dubbo Film Society, Dubbo’s only film appreciation community group which has been operating since 1989.

It is our pleasure to bring quality films to film goers looking for a cinematic experience beyond the mainstream line of box office films. We call ourselves a “Society” because we are able hold our screenings at a venue which offers the full cinema experience but in a format which makes it a social afternoon out for our members and their guests. Become a member and you will be entitled to attend all of our functions at no additional charge – that’s four double feature film afternoons a year and a one day film festival of five films mid year.

Our Films

The films screened include both recent and non-current release films from a variety of nations. Film afternoons generally include an English language and Foreign language subtitled feature length film. The film program mixes of a variety of genres and occasionally includes documentaries and short films. A list of the films that have been screened in the last year or two by the Society appears on this website and you can also download “Two Decades of Film” published in 2009,  a chronicle of the Society’s film programs since 1989. Films are selected during the months leading up to the following film night. A notice advising of the films to be screened is sent out to members and posted on the website at least two to three weeks prior to the event.

The Venue

Films are screened at the Dubbo RSL Theatrette, 178 Brisbane Street, Dubbo.  The theatrette accommodates up to 372 people in a tiered seating arrangement. Seating is unallocated so you can choose to sit wherever you prefer.

How does it operate?

Screenings commence 1.30PM sharp on Sunday 25 February, 26 May, 29 September and 24 November. All members are given a card which is their access to the screening. On the back of this card are the screening dates for the year.

At the afternoon session, two feature length films are screened and during interval refreshments are served (all inclusive with your membership). Bar facilities also operate for members’ convenience.

A day/evening mini film festival is held from 9.30AM on Sunday 28 July with five (5) films screened.

How do I join?

There are 3 easy ways to join.

1. Go to the “Join Us” page of this website and follow the prompts to either join online or via direct payment.

2. Send an email to dubbofilmsociety@gmail.com and request an application form.

3. Turn up to the next film afternoon, Sunday 25 February 2024, and you can join at the door. An annual Subscription will save you over 60% on the casual rate.

What level of involvement is expected?

Above all, we would love you to just come along and enjoy the films that are presented.

At interval there is an opportunity to engage with other members and compare notes on the films or just enjoy the company of friends.

The Film Society is run by an elected Committee of subscribers and interest by aspiring committee subscribers is always welcomed. The Committee is elected at the Annual General Meeting in December each year.

It’s that easy!!
